The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.
A few years ago, I read Kidd's The Mermaid Chair and didn't care for it. At all. This feeling prevented me from reading this book, though I had heard how wonderful it is, for awhile. Because I was not impressed by the storyline or the writing in The Mermaid Chair.
I have to say, I was depriving myself.
This is a tender story, rich with the reality of human emotion, suffering and joy. The relationship between Lily and Zach is one of my favorites in the book because it is so innocent and tender. I hear the movie is great, and I just may see it. But you should all read this book, if you haven't already.

It's been years since I've read this book...and yet it is one of my favorites. If someone asks me to suggest a novel, this and Peace Like A River (Leaf Enger) are the two I always suggest first. So glad you liked it.
I have heard this is a great book...how's the movie-do you know?
shannon, ooh... it looks like i'll have to check peace like a river out. thanks for the recommendation.
chels, i haven't seen the movie, but my mom saw it and liked it.
It's a great book. And I just LOVE the setting. ;)
I recently read the book and saw the movie. They are both excellent, however, like in most cases, the book is better. It has way more detail than the movie, although they are both very good!

LOVED this book. I'm hoping the movie does it justice.
I'm also throwing in my vote for Peace Like A River. Another really excellent choice. Also loved Oh My Stars.
