One year ago today...

Greg proposed to me one year ago today, on July 5, 2007. I have to admit that I didn't see it coming. Sure, we had talked about getting married, but I honestly thought that Greg was going to wait until after he got back from Russia (on a family trip that was scheduled the last two weeks of July). Little did I know, Greg had something else in mind.

A few weeks previous, we were flipping through a wedding magazine that I had gotten, and I saw a picture of a ring that I liked. I casually mentioned this to Greg, and he kind of just nodded and we kept looking through the mag. What I didn't know was the very next day, Greg bought the same magazine up at the U of U bookstore, and took the photo into AAA Jewelers to have the ring custom made. All the while I had NO idea what was going on, and supposed that Greg and I would go ring shopping or something when he got back from his trip.

He got the ring just in time for my little brother's baptism, and actually had it in his suit pocket the whole day. He showed my parents, and of course my mama started bawling, and she wanted him to give it to me asap because she wouldn't be able to keep it a secret. But Greg wanted to make sure that the timing was right.

The night he proposed, he suggested we go to Martine, a restaurant that his dad recommended that we'd wanted to try. So, to me, it was just an average Thursday night date with my bf.

He went to the restaurant ahead of time, and explained to the hostess that he was going to propose, and was able to pick a secluded table. He then picked me up and gave me two dozen beautiful red roses. (I thought they were to placate me because I didn't have a ring yet. He hee.)

We went to the restaurant and sat down, and Greg was looking really nervous and kinda sweaty. I just dismissed it as hunger and didn't really think much about it. Right after we ordered and the waiter left, Greg stood up, kind of abruptly (I was thinking maybe he had to go to the bathroom because he was sick or something) and then looked at me with this grin on his face and I saw he was concealing something in his hands. I seriously said "what are you doing?" because I was beginning to put it all together and was completely shocked. Before I could say anything else, he was down on his knee and said, "So I have a question to ask you... will you marry me?" And OF COURSE I said yes, and I got a bit teary, but didn't cry, shockingly enough. The rest of the dinner was great and my mom absolutely FLIPPED when we drove out to their house to show them the ring. Lots of jumping up and down and crying.

Leave it to Greg to put so much thought and effort into the proposal. It was private, which I was so grateful for; a moment just between us. And it was evidence of his thoughtfulness and sincerity. I am just so grateful that we found each other and that we are so happy together. And I seriously have the prettiest ring ever. So there. :D

How fun! Caleb did the same sort of surprise thing, he kept telling me he was "saving up" for the ring and then surprised me at his cabin in Evanston on Christmas Eve. I was totally clueless, I thought we were going up in an emergency to fix the busted pipes. Not that I know anything about fixing busted water pipes. :) Your ring IS gorgeous!

It's funny that you asked him what he was doing! I think everyone makes weird comments the day they get engaged. That was such a sweet proposal though. Good job Greg!
