For Valentines Day this year, husband got us tickets to the ballet. Which was incredibly sweet of him, seeing as how I had already gotten lovely flowers and wasn't expecting anything else. But that's the kind of guy he is... lucky me.
Ballet West debuted its version of Madame Butterfly, which is a fairly new ballet in of itself; it uses Puccini's music from the opera, without the vocals, and is divided into two acts, rather than three.
As an opening act of sorts, Ballet West preformed the one act ballet, Gong, which was absolutely lovely. It is a contemporary ballet that implements the use of Balinese music and dancing. It was quite entertaining and interesting to watch. Plus the costumes were by Isaac Mizrahi, which I thought was kind of fun.
As for Madame Butterfly itself, I think it's the best ballet performance I have ever attended. (And believe you me, I've seen a lot.) I love the opera; it is one of my favorites. So to see the story told through the lens of dance was so incredible. The choreography was technical, yet seamless. The costumes and set were also top-notch. Oh yeah, and did I mention we were on the fifth row? Because maybe we totally were. And maybe I freaked out a little bit when I noticed that we were on row E... in a good way of course. Thanks husband for the wonderful Valentines Day. I heart you lots and lots and lots.
