And round three goes to the husband...

It was only a matter of time before my body succumbed.

Last week it was the mother of all head colds/sinus infections, and an almost frenetic dependency on NyQuil. (So maybe that last part is a bit dramatic, but you have to admit the phrase "frenetic dependency" is absolutely delicious, is it not?)

It seemed a miracle that on Sunday I emerged from my pressured stuffiness as if nothing had happened. I had enough energy to chase around the eight (yes, EIGHT) 3 year olds in my charge at church, and was excited to start the new week unencumbered by illness.

I knew it was too good to be true.

It started on Sunday night. Mild pangs of nausea that I attributed to my deep-seeded hypochondriac tendencies and perhaps a bit too much food. On Monday, these pangs had developed into full-bodied waves of nausea, to the point where I thought I might vomit if I shifted my weight in the wrong direction. I didn't have any other flu-like symptoms, so I was befuddled by my mystery illness.

As the day progressed, the waves would subside back to the mild pangs I had previously experienced. Tums softened the acidic war that was raging in my insides, but did not completely quell the feeling that I could vomit at any moment.

Remember how I have an irrational fear of throwing up?

Monday night brought hours of sleeplessness and discomfort. It took all my will power to get myself out of bed and to work on Tuesday. And that day was fraught with the punching staccato of nausea that caused me to leave work early. (At this point, I almost wanted to throw up, just so the pain would stop. Yup, I was desperate.)

I came home in a flurry of frustrated tears, to a tender and understanding companion. He put my on the couch, covered me up and went to go get me some soup and medicine. (He had to go all the way to Soup Kitchen in Sugarhouse because that was literally the only thing I could think about eating without feeling sick.) He brought back the delicious fare with a magazine for good measure.

He is such a good, caring man.

Which is why round three goes to him. It's because of him that I woke up on Wednesday feeling exponentially better.

The jury is still out on the cause...

I think I may just have an ulcer.

And round two goes to the cold...

Remember how I said I was only going to take NyQuil for two nights?

I stubbornly held to this declaration after feeling exponentially better on Wednesday. The night came, and I defiantly laughed at the bottle of Cherry NyQuil perched on my sink.

Bad idea.

Wednesday night was fraught with my "normal" off-the-wall dreams (driving a semi-truck by Lake Victoria in order to evade bombing terrorists... really?) and multiple mid-slumber awakenings. With the lovely addition of all things congested.

Thursday was subsequently filled with droopy eyelids, no appetite and an overall languor that I'm sure was readily visible, in spite of my best efforts to conceal it.

So let's just say I took some NyQuil last night. [And it was slumberlicious, thank you very much.]

An ode to NyQuil

I typically don't take medicine.

Perhaps it's the way I am wired, but I characteristically have to take copious amounts of OTC stuff for it to work. (This mostly refers to ibuprofen and acetaminophen... and why would I risk damaging my liver I ask you?)

Thus yesterday was a veritable sinus hell. It was one of those "oh hey, it feels like my sinuses are being attacked by a jack hammer" days, with the accompanying sore throat, achy muscles and plugged ears. Not the best combo when you have to go to a client meeting.

After I got home, I laid around like a slug for the rest of the evening, moving slightly to accommodate eating and bathroom trips. It was pretty pathetic. So right before bed, I decided to bite the bullet and down some NyQuil.

I think I may be in love with NyQuil a little bit. (Don't worry husb, I love you much, MUCH more.)

I can't remember the last time I had a decent night's sleep. To be honest, it was probably the last time I was sick and took some NyQuil.

It's incredible.

I awoke this morning feeling infinitely better, if only because I logged more than four hours of blissful, uninterrupted slumber.

So thrilled was I, that I decided to take some more medicine with my breakfast, an Aleve D. And my sinuses practically danced with delight. Today I have actually been able to focus and do my work. While I'm not 100% better, I feel 100% better than yesterday.

So thank you, dear NyQuil, for providing me with your medicinal and slumber-ifical goodness. I just might take advantage of you again tonight. Perhaps.

[P.S. Don't worry, I'm not addicted to NyQuil. I think at some point I very well could be, which is why tonight (if I end up deciding to take some more) will be the last night I take it. The lure of continuous, pleasant slumber would be too much if I kept taking it throughout the duration of my illness. Which duration is hopefully brief. This is also why I have never taken any pills to help me sleep. I think I would like them too much. Hehee.]

Sorry trees....

but I went through an entire box of tissues today. By noon.

I'll try to ration my remaining box to get me through the rest of the day.
